(President
of Prefecture
for the Economic Affairs of the Holy See,
Vatican City)

Cultures vary greatly from one country
to another. The proclamation of the Gospel must take account of these differences.
However, it is also important to remember that human nature is the same
in every culture and in every country. Every human being, no matter what
the ethnic, cultural or sexual identity, shares the same human nature.
While we discuss and seek ways to
inculturate the Gospel, it is important, I believe, to keep in mind the
communality of the human race as well as the diversity of cultures.
The great gift of the Church in Africa
to the whole Church is its vitality, enthusiasm and dedication. Its strong
family life and respect and love for life itself are values which are under
great strain and outright attack in countries of the West.
The experiences of the Church in
the West can be of help to the Church in Africa, not only our good experiences
but our mistakes as well.
I strongly suggest that the resolutions
and statement of this Synod, while acknowledging the challenges and difficulties,
have a very strong, positive tone, reflecting the hope and joy of the vibrant,
vital Church in Africa. We must always reflect the optimism, hope, joy
and peace which come from the depths of our own faith and our own acceptance
of the Good News of salvation.
