Cardinal
Nicolas LOPEZ RODRIGUEZ
(Archbishop of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic)

There are many common elements between
the Synod for Africa and the Fourth General Conference of the Latin American
Episcopate celebrated in Santo Domingo in October of 1992.
Africa and America are two continents
with many historical links, episodes and periods which were very painful
and embarrassing.
In the name of many millions of Afro-Americans,
we would like to send a cordial embrace to Africa.
The Church in Latin America and in
the Caribbean has given special attention to the Afro-Americans. The Holy
Father has also had brotherly gestures of predilection with these groups.
In the document of the Fourth General
Conference, Latin America is recognised as a multi-ethnic and pluri-cultural
continent. The Church wishes to warn the Afro-American people to defend
their identity and their roots.
In this momentous occasion of the
XX century and at the doors of the third millennium, African and America
discover the common responsibility of new evangelisation.
Despite our cultural differences,
there is much that we can share. We have a generous laity, even if the
priestly and religious vocations are limited. This laity is ready to share
the responsibility of announcing the Good News to today?s man.
