Cardinal Antonio
Maria JAVIERRE ORTAS
(Prefect of the Congregation
for Divine Worship and
Sacraments,
Vatican City)

Inculturation, which today is also indispensable
in the field of liturgy, exceeds a great deal the limited horizon of adaptation.
In view of this, it represents progress similar to the one achieved with
the introducing of dialogue by passing from the method of conversion to
ecumenism.
Although "in liturgy, in particular with regard
to the sacraments, there is a part which does not change ? by divine institution
? of which the Church is keeper" (CCC 1205), there is no reason to fear
violence: on the one hand, the first principle of dialogue is total respect
for the identity of the interlocutor; and, on the other hand, constant
vigilance corresponds to the ecclesial Magisterium, aware of the close
link between "lex credendi" and "lex supplicandi" to the extent that "the
law of prayer is the law of faith; the Church believes in the way she prays.
The liturgy is a constitutional element of the hold and live tradition"
(CCC 1124). Tradition is the treasure entrusted by God, which the Church
keeps throughout the centuries, thanks to transmission ("paradosis katà
diadochen"). The Fathers of the Council took into account this ministry
at the time of defining the liturgical reform. The post Council Magisterium
faithfully follows its service. By order of the Supreme Pontiff, the competent
Congregation has just published instructions for interpreting in inculturation
terms the numbers of SC 37-40 that deal with this reality, although formulated
with the old terminology.
The African Churches have been called to support
the entire dialogue, letting themselves be inculturated and, in turn, generating
culture. Dialogue with the old Churches in Europe will serve to ensure
the necessary help and toast the young and rejoice in the celebration.
Dialogue with the Holy See will enrich the universal and the local Churches
in such a delicate and promising moment as now to put in practice inculturation
in the very heart of ecclesial life.
