Archbishop
Norbert Wendelin MTEGA
(Archbishop
of Songea, Tanzania)

It is a fact that there are already
trends in the life of the clergy which call for our imminent attention
and action. The following are some suggestions for improving the spirituality
of the clergy in Africa:
1) That the Bishops adopt as their
pastoral priority the task of deepening the spirituality of seminarians
and religious as well as improving their academic standards.
2) That dioceses collaborate to train
teams of spiritual formators and to establish spiritual centres.
3) That we adapt the way of life
in the seminaries to follow the model of small Christian communities and
thus to try to live the spirituality of these communities.
4) That we introduce the Social Teaching
of the Church in the timetable of the seminary, both as a theoretical study
and as a practical programme, e.g. practice in helping the sick, the old,
the illiterate and the youth.
5) That the diocesan seminarian and
clergy be introduced to a diocesan and apostolic spirituality which will
make them become contemplative in action.
6) That there be possibility of exchanging
some of our seminarians for studies in our various seminaries in order
to expose them to missionary aptitude.
