Bishop
Anthony Okonkwo GBUJI
(Bishop of Issele-Uku, Nigeria)
In 1982, His Holiness
Pope John Paul II visited Nigeria and challenged the Church there to a "new
era of evangelisation".
In response to the Pope’s
call the need for deepening the faith-commitment of the people of God became
obvious.
Through contact with
Evangelisation 2000, the idea of developing some programme for the formation of
agents of evangelisation cristalised.
Twenty five schools of
Evangelisation have now been established in the country. Courses are run for
both the clergy, religious and the laity with good results.
Sister Churches of
Africa are invited to share the fruit of this rewarding experiment.
Hence the Catholic
Bishops Conference of Nigeria strongly recommends that this Synod address the
practical issue of carrying out the mission of evangelisation in Africa now and
in the next century.
